Gene Sibley

Eugene Sibley, age 82, of Huron, died Sunday, October 10, 2010, at Sanford U.S.D. Medical Center in Sioux Falls.  His funeral mass was at 1:00 PM Thursday, October 14th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Terry Anderson officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.

Eugene A. Sibley was born April 23, 1928, to Edwin and Stella (Olmsted) Sibley in Huron.  He attended Huron Public Schools graduating in 1946.  He was a member of the 1945 Huron High School basketball team that won the ESD conference title and the State “A” Champion title.  In 1946, he was a member of the football team that won the ESD conference title.  He was also on the 1946 basketball team that was runner-up in the State “A” tournament.  He graduated from Huron College with a BA in Business Administration in 1950.  While going to college he worked as a bookkeeper for A.M. Urquhart Ford Agency.  Upon graduation he worked for Rozum Ford as an automobile salesman.

On August 10, 1950, Eugene married Montelle M. Darner in Huron.  Eugene was called to active duty with the South Dakota National Guard – 196 RTC on September 1, 1950, and was discharged in May of 1952 at the rank of Master Sergeant.  While on active duty he was at Camp Carson, Colorado and Fort Richardson, Alaska during the Korean War. In September of 1953, he joined D. Urquhart & Sons, the Chrysler-Plymouth dealer as a salesman.  In August of 1969, he purchased the dealership and started Sibley Motor Inc. which is still in operation. 

Eugene was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.  He was active in Huron as a member of Huron Jaycees, a member and served as a Board member of the Huron Chamber of Commerce and the Huron Country Club.  He had also served on the board of trustees of Huron College as well as the Huron College Foundation.  He had been inducted into the Huron College Hall of Fame.  Eugene had served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board and was active in the Crossroads Hotel and Convention Center as a member of its operating committee.  He was also a member of the American Legion.

Eugene enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing bridge, golfing, big band music, and spending time in Arizona.  He married Marcie Swenson on April 24, 1982.

Eugene was preceded in death by his wife Monte, on September 14, 1980 and two step-sons, David and Scott Swenson.

Survivors include his wife, Marcie Swenson-Sibley; one son, Mark (Michelle) Sibley of Huron; two daughters, Janet Olivera of Los Alamos, California, and Ellen Sibley of Lauderdale, Minnesota; one sister, Winifred (Richard) Cooper of Morrill, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Joseph (Esmy) Brandhagen, Matthew Mark Sibley, Gabe Sibley, and Matthew Todd Sibley; one stepson, Brad (Konni) Swenson; one step-daughter-in-law, Diane Swenson; six step-grandchildren, Matthew Marvin (Marie) Swenson, Carrie (Todd) LaRocque, Ashley Swenson, Tommy Swenson, Joe (Amanda) Swenson and Brian (Jessica) Swenson; and two great-grandchildren, Lucas Sibley and Luca Olivia LaRocque.
