Gene Kant folder photo 2Gene Kant, age 77, of Huron, died Monday, November 10, 2008 at his home.  His funeral service was 2:00 PM Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Hunt officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.

Gene Kant was born October 14, 1931, to George and Hilda (Houtari) Kant at Bryant.  He grew up in the Bryant and Vienna areas, attending country schools.  Gene entered the United States Army in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1954.

On December 9, 1955, Gene married Verna Boyd at Huron.  After the Army, Gene worked for several farmers at Huron, Carthage and Doland.  Their family moved to Huron in 1965, where he held several jobs until he started driving a milk truck, which he did for ten and a half years.  In 1977, Gene sold the milk truck and worked for Mick’s Milling until it closed.  Gene then worked for Carlson’s Northside Service until his retirement in July 2008.

Gene’s hobbies included fishing, camping and bowling.  A very proud moment in Gene's life was when he and his family were inducted into the South Dakota Bowling Hall of Fame as the very first ”Family of the Year.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verna on October 17, 2001; twin brother, Jack in 1971; one sister, Audrey Skinner in 2007; one son, Edward in 1960; two grandsons, Drew Kant in 1992 and Tony Waldner in 2006; two great-granddaughters, Amanda Ravenscroft in 1993 and Autumn Dorris in 2005; and a son-in-law, Lester McKinney.

Grateful for having shared his life are his four daughters and their husbands, Mae and Don Tschetter of Huron, Jean and Russell North of Huron, Karen and Mike King of Huron, and Karla and Jared Lentz of Valley Springs; two sons and their wives, Bill and Patricia Kant of Renner and David and Leslie Kant of Sioux Falls; eighteen grandchildren, Wendy (Todd) Ravenscroft, Nikki (Darren) Sundstrom, Darlena (Patrick) Fischer, Jeremy (Stephanie) North, Tonya (Mike) Dorris, Xavier Kant, Jeff (Amy Jo Bauer) Richey, John King, Jonathon Burkle, Shay Sell, D.J. Kant, Mason Kant, Brady Snow, Emma Kant, Jenna Kant, William Kant, Kassandra Brede and Devin Bobeldyke; fifteen great-grandchildren, Ryan Ravenscroft, Stephanie, Tiffanie and Sheldon Sundstrom, Caitlyn, James and Nathaniel Fischer, Sami Zell, Kaleb Sypniewski, Bryson North, Michael, Brandon, Blake and Damian Dorris, and baby Richey due in December 2008; three sisters, Evelyn Wolkow and Beverly Mulder, both of De Smet, and Joann and Ron Miller of Canova; one brother, Gerald and Ardis Kant of Hesperia, California; and many nieces and nephews.
