Fern Waltner

Fern Waltner, age 86, of Huron and formerly of Brookings, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  Her funeral service was at 10:00 AM Saturday, January 28th, at the American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating.  Burial was in the Brookings Lutheran Church Cemetery at Brookings.

Fern V. Schoppert was born June 3, 1925, to Robert and Louise (Roduner) Schoppert at Clayton, South Dakota.  She graduated from Marion High School in 1942.

On December 31, 1944, Fern married Lyle R. Waltner at Marion. Their family moved to Brookings in 1959.  Fern moved to Huron in 2011 to be closer to family.

Fern enjoyed gardening vegetables and flowers.  She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, and the 8-40 LeFemme.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lyle on March 12, 2011; a brother Donald Schoppert; a son-in-law James “Jim” Anderson; a brother-in-law, Dwight Waltner; and a niece and a nephew.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her four children, Paulette Anderson of Farmington, Minnesota, Maureen (Boyd) Heckel of Huron, Sally (Terry) Long of Lewistown, Montana, and Monica (Craig) Jones of Huron; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Violet Pickering of Yankton, Norma (Floyd) Mills of Custer, and Sharon (Verlyn) Hauck of Menno; two brothers, Robert (Joan) Schoppert of Boulder, Colorado, and Sherwin Schoppert of Renner; and many nieces and nephews.
