Don Crippen officiating.  Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron.  The family requests memorials to the American Legion, the Huron Public Library, or the First United Methodist Church.

Fern A. Ellerton, the daughter of William Arthur “Artie” and Lola Mabel (Harter) Ellerton, was born August 7, 1916, near Highmore, South Dakota.  She graduated from Highmore High School in 1934.  After attending the Northern Normal and Industrial School in Aberdeen, Fern earned an Elementary School Certificate and taught school for ten years.  In 1986 the South Dakota Department of Agriculture awarded Fern a Certificate of Recognition for service to the state as a teacher in a One-Teacher Country School.

On December 6, 1941, Fern married John Harold Johnson in Huron, South Dakota.  John died on June 20, 1995.

Fern worked briefly at Armour & Company and for many years as a sales clerk for Tempo Department Store and J. C. Penney’s.  During elections, she worked as a poll watcher.

A longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1776, Fern served as Auxiliary president in 1961 and received the Lady of Distinction Award on August 27, 1963.  Also active in The American Legion Auxiliary Eight and Forty, she received a Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Service to that organization on July 23, 2005.

Fern’s volunteer activities included assisting with free blood pressure clinics at Lewis Drug Store and delivering patient mail at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  She enjoyed country line dancing and performed with fellow dancers at the South Dakota State Fair and at the Huron Nursing Home.

For many years Fern attended the First United Methodist Church, and she participated in the United Methodist Women’s Loyalty Circle.  Her hobbies included reading, quilting, and crocheting. When her children were younger Fern was actively involved by being a Scout Leader, PTA officer, and room mother. Fern is fondly remembered as a patient, positive person who loved to dance and stood out as a good cook—especially for her creampuffs, doughnuts, pies, and picnic fare.

Pry of Elberfeld, Indiana; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Ellerton and wife Alma of North Fort Myers, Florida; and a sister, Imogene Hieb of Harrold, South Dakota.
