Donald Eugene “Gene” Murphy

D. Eugene “Gene” Murphy, age 90, of Huron, died Friday, December 28, 2007, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.  Graveside services were held at 3:00 PM,  Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the Altoona Cemetery in Hitchcock.  Memorials may be directed to the Altoona Cemetery Association or the Elks National Foundation c/o Huron Lodge #444.

Donald Eugene Murphy was born June 29, 1917, at Hitchcock, South Dakota to James and Lufa (Oleson) Murphy.  He lived in Hitchcock until his early teens, when he moved with his family to Huron following the death of his father.  After graduating from Huron High School in 1935 he attended business school.  Gene worked at Armour and Company in Denver for several years, at J.C. Penney in Tacoma, Washington, and later returned to Huron.  Prior to his retirement in 1982, he worked at Randall’s Grocery in Huron for twenty-five years.

Gene had trained with the South Dakota National Guard and was a member of the Huron Elks Club.

Gene enjoyed walking and riding his bicycle all over the city.  He had even pedaled his “one-gear” bicycle to Forestburg and back at age 88.  Working on his house and yard was especially enjoyable for him due to his love of nature.  He had planted and nurtured from seed both a Gravenstein apple tree and a pear tree in his yard.  He was so proud of them.

He is survived by his sister, Millicent Poole of Tacoma, Washington and ten nieces and nephews, Camille Sue Schroeder of Shorewood, Minnesota, Judy Reedy Duhamel of Rapid City, South Dakota, James K. Poole of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Tim G. Poole of Shelton, Washington, Dan Poole of Tacoma, Washington, Mike Murphy of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Kim Murphy of Douglas, Arizona, Terry Murphy of Austin, Texas, Dan Murphy of Roanoke, Virginia, and Jay Murphy of Seattle, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters, Robert Murphy, Beulah Gehringer, Camille Reedy, Richard Murphy, Lufa Murphy and Catherine Bliss.
