Ernest Baruth obit photoErnest Baruth, age 97, of Alpena, died Monday, January 26, 2009, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.   His funeral service was at 11:00 AM Thursday at Riverview United Methodist Church, 1640 Simmons SE, Huron with Pastor Sarah Herman and Rev. Barry Whipkey officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Ernest Henry Baruth was born October 18, 1911, to Louis and Willamina(Schroeder) Baruth at Alexandria, Nebraska.  He graduated from Alpena High School in 1933.  He farmed with his brother, Harlowe, and step-dad, Edgar Knox until 1942, when he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served on the destroyer U.S.S. Rathburne as a ship-fitter in the South Pacific.

On April 2, 1942, he married Myrtle Bergeleen in Sioux Falls.  After discharge from the Navy, he returned to Alpena where he continued to farm for the rest of his life.  He lived in his current home since 1946.  He was an excellent welder and a very inventive person.

Grateful for having shared his life are his three sons, Larry (Jan), Tommy (Sheila), and Ronnie (Debra) along with his two granddaughters, Shayna (Matt) Leahy and Tori (Eric) White and special dog friend, Melvin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle in 1988; his parents; his sisters, Ada and Hazel; and his brother, Harlowe.  He was greatly respected as a neighbor and friend, and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
