Erna Bertsch obituary photoErna Bertsch, age 86, of Huron, died Sunday, January 2, 2011, at her home.  Her funeral service was at 11 AM Wednesday, January 5th at the First Baptist Church. Private family burial was prior to the service on Wednesday morning at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the Huron Hospice. 

Born February 20, 1924, in Venturia, North Dakota, to Fred and Rosina (Kemmet)  Thurn, Erna grew up on the family farm and attended country school.  She married Wilbert Bertsch and moved to Huron in 1949.

Erna worked at the Huron College bookstore and in the kitchen at the Huron Senior High School.  She volunteered at the Senior Center and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Erna enjoyed being with her family and friends.  Her favorite pastimes included tending her flowers, doing needlework, watching television, and shopping.

She is survived by her husband, Wilbert of Huron; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Dennis Fiedler of Lincoln, Nebraska; two sons, Steve Bertsch of Spearfish and Brian Bertsch of Huron; one granddaughter, Kayla; two great-grandsons, Jaeden and Zachery of Rapid City; two sisters, Esther Olmstead of Wishek, North Dakota, and Leah (Harold) Grasmick of Lodi, California; a brother, Herbert (Mildred) Thurn of Bismarck, North Dakota; a sister-in-law, Delores Thurn of Wishek; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother-in-law, Bernie Olmstead; and a brother, Alvin Thurn.
