Ellen Hougland obituary photoEllen Hougland, age 100, of Huron and formerly of Lake Preston, died Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.  Her funeral mass was celebrated at 11 AM Monday, October 29th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Huron by Father Terry Anderson and Father Cathal Gallagher.  Burial was in the Lake Preston Cemetery at Lake Preston.   

Ellen Elizabeth Gill was born July 6, 1912, at Elk Point, South Dakota to John Vincent and Margaret Ellen (Brown) Gill.  She grew up at Elk Point and graduated from high school there.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Rosary College in River Forrest, Illinois.  She worked as a dietician at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee, Illinois, and then as a home supervisor for Farm Security Administration at Vermillion and Brookings.  At the time of her marriage she was a demonstration agent for Turner County, South Dakota.  She married Wayne E. Hougland on December 29, 1951 at Elk Point, South Dakota.  They made their home in Lake Preston, South Dakota.

Ellen loved traveling, camping and going south in their Airstream camper.  She also enjoyed cooking and entertaining.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her five sons; two sisters; two grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She is survived by 16 grandchildren, Steve Hougland, Dan Hougland, Wendell (Kevin) Hougland, Gaylene Gebhardt, Denise St. John, Cindy Badour, Shelly McAloon, Wanda Barthelman, Dean Hougland, Brendee Wilson, Blair Guerrieri, Billy Hougland, Rhonda Hougland, Renea Hougland, Timothy Hougland, and Benjamin Hougland; 25 great grandchildren; 24 great-great grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law, Betty Hougland of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
