Dorothy A. Rogers

Dorothy Rogers, age 84, of Huron, died Sunday, November 23, 2008, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  Her funeral service was at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 26th at the Grace Episcopal Church with Rev. George Parmeter officiating.  Burial was in the Black Hills National Cemetery on Friday at 2:30 PM.   

Dorothy Alice May was born January 17, 1924, on the May family farm along the James River near Huron, South Dakota, to Clifford Charles May and Nellie Adeline Bemis May. While growing up, she worked on the farm and enjoyed her love for horses. After graduating from Huron High School, she worked as a teller at a local bank. Then during World War II, Dorothy lived on the Oregon coast working in the ship yards as a welder.

Upon returning to Huron, she married James Howard Rogers on June 17, 1950. While being a homemaker and raising four children, Dorothy worked in medical records as a nursing assistant and as a bank teller.  Dorothy enjoyed working with horses especially breeding, training and riding Albino and Arabian horses.  She enjoyed trick horse riding with her brother, Stanley.  Dorothy played the guitar in a band on the radio.  She was the catcher for the 4-H club women’s softball team and liked watching the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball games.  Dorothy read western novels and spent many hours embroidering blankets for all her great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, James H. Rogers; her parents, Clifford and Nellie May; two brothers, Albert M. May and Stanley I. May; two brothers-in-law, Gail D. Mallon and Jack K. Rogers; and one sister in-law, Lillian D. May.

Grateful for having shared her life are her four children and their spouses, Sylvia and Dan Sackett of Escondido, California, Crystal and Doug Shippy of Elko, Nevada, Wyatt and Yvette Rogers of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Leslie and Chuck Danielson of Mesa, Arizona; twelve grandchildren, Sheri Beighley, Danny, Shon, and Devin Sackett, Brady Shippy, Brandi Johns, TJ Shippy,  Ron Pino, Aleena Rogers, and Charlie, Kyle and Crysandra Danielson; seventeen great-grandchildren, Tori, Teeli, Christian, Chasity, Corynn, Curtis, Seth, Griffin, Casey, Tanner, Kailee, Reagan, Maguire, Shaleigh, McKalester, Tucker, and Langley Ray; one great great-grandchild, Tyler; one sister, Marie I. Mallon of Huron; one brother, Dale A. May of Huron; and four sisters-in-law, Ellen May of Leesburg, Ohio, Eva Heller of Denver, Colorado, Beverly Rogers of Huron, and Ida Beverly and her husband Glen Gulberg of Sioux Falls.
