Donna Kowalke obituary photoDonna Kowalke, age 67, of Huron, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at SunQuest Healthcare Center.  Her funeral service was at 11 AM Monday, April 25th, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wolsey with the Rev. L. Scott Spiehs officiating.  Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Donna Marie Kowalke was born May 11, 1943, in Huron, South Dakota, to Adolph and Beatrice (Teply) Kowalke.  She grew up in Wolsey and graduated from Wolsey High School in 1961.  Donna was confirmed in St. John’s Lutheran Church at Wolsey and was a current member.  While in high school Donna worked for the Wolsey News. 

Following high school, Donna studied Business Accounting and Secretarial Science at Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls and graduated in 1963.  She was employed at the Argus Leaderfor thirteen years where she held the positions of assistant state editor, librarian, newsroom receptionist and secretary to the executive editor.  She was also assistant treasurer of the Argus Leader Credit Union. 

While living in Sioux Falls she was a member and held various offices in American Business Women’s Association, National Secretaries Association and Toastmistress Club. 

She married Gary Iddings on February 14, 1976, in Sioux Falls.  Following her divorce in 1978, she moved to Huron where she was employed by Community Counseling for thirty years, and for Kuhler Funeral Home for thirty-two years.  She was a stringer for the Wolsey News for a time and had reported news from Wolsey on KIJV radio station from 1978 until just recently.  Donna also served on the Board of Directors of Beadle Transit, People’s Transit and the Huron Taxi Board for several years.  She was a member of the Friends of the Library and a life-long member of the Huron Area Senior Center. 

Donna compiled and edited the Wolsey History Book for the Wolsey Centennial in 1983, and was a co-chairman and helped write the Beadle County History Book.  She also helped write a training manual for the vocational program at the Bradfield-Leary Center.

She was preceded in death by her mother Beatrice, in 2003, her father Adolph in 1949, and her maternal and paternal grandparents. 

Grateful for having shared in her life are her brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Marlyce Kowalke of Moorhead, Minnesota; two nieces, Angie (Tim) Thomas of West Fargo, North Dakota, and Cindy (Gerald) Thomas of Fargo, North Dakota; several great-nieces; and one great-nephew.
