Dihl Hougland obituary photo 2Dihl Hougland, age 79, of Huron, died Friday, February 18, 2011, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  His funeral service was at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 22nd at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Crippen officiating.  Military rites was presented by the Huron Veterans Council.  Burial was in the Lake Preston Cemetery.   The family prefers memorials. 

Dihl Duane Hougland was born March 19, 1931, to Wayne E. and Dolores (Wilson) Hougland at Wessington Springs. Dihl was baptized June 26, 1932, at the Methodist Episcopal Church at Lane, South Dakota. He grew up in the Brookings and Lake Preston areas, graduating from Lake Preston High School in 1951.  While at Lake Preston High School, Dihl was a member of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and a member of the church choir, as well as a sub-district officer of worship and evangelism for one year.  During Dihl’s high school years, he worked as a projectionist for the theatre, at the hardware store, and also as a short order cook in the café.

Dihl joined the United States Navy on June 13, 1951.  On October 4, 1951, he was shipped overseas, reporting aboard the U.S.S. P.C.E.(C)-898 in Yokoska, Japan.  On March 27, 1954, Dihl reported aboard the U.S.S. Marietta AN-82 which was at Newport, Rhode Island.  He was honorably discharged on June 2, 1955. Dihl then enrolled in auto mechanics at Southern State Teachers College.

On August 12, 1956, Dihl married Patricia Stymiest at Lake Preston.

He was a mechanic at Farmers Union at Lake Preston and then a custodian at the Lake Preston School.  In 1977 they moved to Huron, where Dihl was a custodian for the Huron Public School District until his retirement in 1993.  On May 13, 1992, he received recognition of meritorious service from the Huron Public School District for his 15 years of service.

Dihl was a life member of the V.F.W. and a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Merle, Berk, Ron and Dahl; one son, Duane; and one great-grandson, Owen Eagle Star.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Patricia of Huron; five children, Denise (Dave) St. John of Douglas, Wyoming, Cindy Eagle Star of Huron, Shelly (Todd) McAloon of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Wanda (Darwin) Barthelman of Huron, and Dean Hougland of Mitchell; thirteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; his step-mother, Ellen Hougland of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.
