Clara Belle Curtis was born February 4, 1911, to Albert and Mattie (Barnes) Curtis at rural Wessington, South Dakota.  Clara attended grade school in rural Nance Township and graduated from Wessington High School. She attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and taught 5 years in rural Nance Township where she was fondly remembered by her students.

On April 23, 1933, Clara married William McNeill of Nance Township in Redfield. They farmed in Nance Township until 1938 and then moved to a farm near Buffalo, Minnesota. In 1946, they bought the McNeill farm in Beadle County and moved back to South Dakota. In 1978, they retired to a home in Huron, and then to an apartment in 1986. In 1996, Clara moved to Coos Bay, Oregon, to be closer to her sons.

Clara was a member of the Bonilla Presbyterian Church and Ladies Society and a member of the Turtle Creek Ladies Aid. She served on the Nance Township School Board for many years. It was always an “open house” at Clara’s home. She truly enjoyed her large family and friends. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Mattie Curtis; her husband, Bill McNeill; three brothers, Ralph, Roy and Floyd Curtis; and five sisters, Dorothy Eshler, Gladys Newman, Mildred Kenyon, Ruth Binger, and Helen Voorhees.
