Lewis W. Howells was born February 17, 1930, in Morristown, Pennsylvania to Lewis and Kathryn (Schmeyer) Howells. He grew up in Morristown and graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in mining engineering. Lewis served in the U.S. Army in 1952. He moved to Huron in 1959 and was employed by the U.S. Geological Survey for 37 years, retiring in 1995. He married Mayme Ranta October 9, 1965, and they resided in Huron. Lewis enjoyed gardening and helping his wife with her ceramics shop. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, May; his daughter, Patricia Howells; and his stepson, John Ranta. He is survived by his sons, Lewis, of Renton, WA and David (Barbara) Howells, of Crown Point, IN; his stepson, Fred (Barb) Ranta, of Golden, CO; his brother, Roger (Joyce) Howells, of Orefield, PA; his daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Ranta; three grandchildren, Jennifer Howells, Cindy (Randy) Hass and Roy (Diane) Ranta; and four great-grandchildren.
