Helmuth R. Stahl was born May 13, 1925, to John P. and Rachael (Kleinsasser) Stahl on a farm near Hitchcock. He received his education up to the eighth grade at a country school. In 1939, after his father passed away, Helmuth’s family moved to Huron. In 1940, Helmuth started to work for Coast to Coast Hardware Store. After graduating from Huron High School in 1943, Helmuth enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during World War II in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1951, Helmuth was called back into the United States Navy during the Korean War, where he was stationed at the Atlantic Fleet Headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia until 1952, when he was again honorably discharged. On June 23, 1953, Helmuth married Bernadine Waldner at Huron. In 1954, he purchased the Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Huron, which he owned and operated for 35 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph Stahl in infancy and Ruben and his wife, Marie Stahl; and two sisters and their husbands, Katie and Eric Dietrich and Tillie and Clarence Darland.
