Beverly Olson

Beverly Olson, age 71, of Huron, died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at her residence.  Her funeral service was at 11 AM Wednesday, March 19th at the Riverview United Methodist Church with Rev. Barry Whipkey, officiating.   On Thursday, March 20th at 11 AM a celebration of life service was held at the Kotrba Funeral Home in Gregory.   Burial was in the IOOF Cemetery at Gregory.

Beverly Olson was born September 20, 1936, to Bill and Blanche (Auwerter) Jewell in Lead, South Dakota.  The family lived on a farm at Claremont, Minnesota from 1942 to 1947, before moving to Dallas, South Dakota.  Bev attended grade school and three years of high school in Dallas and graduated from high school in Gregory in 1954.  She married Stan Smith in 1956.  They lived in Winner, where their sons, Kelley and Brad were born.

In 1957, she began her longtime career with the Farmers Home Administration, known today as USDA Rural Development.  Bev was first employed at the Winner County Office as a clerk and became assistant Tripp County supervisor in 1976.  In 1984, she transferred to Huron as assistant county supervisor.  Bev joined the Aberdeen district office as a loan specialist in 1988, and joined the state staff in Huron in 1992.  She retired from the state office in Huron in 1996, after forty years of service.

On May 1, 1994, Bev married Dareld Olson, a former classmate from Gregory High School.  They enjoyed their home in Huron with their beautiful flowers and vegetable gardens.

She was a wonderful, caring and generous person, always the caregiver.  Bev gave so much love to all who knew her.  She was a card player, computer whiz and loved her crossword puzzles.  We teased Bev about all those blueberries (smart food) she ate to get those puzzles worked.  She was a classy dresser, loved to shop, and would have danced every day if she could have.

Bev and Dareld had a very special bond with her sisters and their husbands, enjoying many trips and fun times together.  She shared so many special times with her girlfriends from Winner and their husbands.  Bev’s love for her family was never ending.  She cherished every moment with her sons and their families.

Bev lost her mother in September 2005, her son, Brad in October 2005,and her son, Kelley in November 2007.  She was also preceded in death by her father, Bill Jewell, her first husband, Stan Smith, and her great-niece, Cassidy Guenther.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Dareld Olson; Kelley’s children, Blake, Luke and Kelsey Smith and their mother, Terrill (Tom) Bradford; Brad’s children, William and Kristal Smith and their mother, Cheril (Tom) Meiners; Dareld’s daughters, Lori and Luigi Di Russo and Lisa Keister; Lori’s children, Shawna, Erica, Lauren and Loganne; Lisa’s children, Hannah and Haley; her sister, Darlene and her husband, Lloyd Lueken and their children, Chris (Ray) Guenther, Darin (Susie) Lueken and Jamie (Aaron) Ness; her sister, Kathy and her husband, Roger Larsen and their children, Aaron (Shelli) Larsen and Amber Larsen; Dareld’s family, Rusty Olson and his wife, Elly, Ellen and her husband, Dennis Sargent, Beverly and her husband, Dave Thomas, and Marlo Olson and his wife, Jackie; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
