Betty Kuhns obituary photo 2Betty Kuhns, age 79, of Huron, died Friday, June 22, 2012, at Huron Regional Medical Center. Burial was at 1 PM Wednesday, June 27th, at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.  The funeral service was at 2 PM Wednesday, at First Baptist Church in Huron with Rev. Marc Anderson officiating. 

Betty M. Whittemore was born December 6, 1932, to Clifford and Doris (Bailly) Whittemore at Watertown, South Dakota.  As a child she moved with her family to Stillwater, Minnesota and Willow Lake, South Dakota, where she graduated from high school.  She continued her education at Northwest College of Commerce in Huron, South Dakota. 

Betty worked for a time in Huron, and was united in marriage to Henry Cook on June 5, 1953.  Their daughter Joan was born January 8, 1955.  Betty was involved in Henry’s service station businesses in Huron and they managed the Coast-to-Coast store in Arlington for several years in the 1960s.  She was the bookkeeper for Habicht’s department store, and continued her career at Burnison’s, Inc. until her retirement. 

Betty married A.R. “Bud” Kuhns on April 26, 1997, in Huron.  Together they enjoyed spending several winters in Arizona and summers beautifying the “home place” at the farm at Huron.  Betty was active in her church, community and professional groups, faithfully and joyfully sharing her gifts of music and hospitality as well as her business skills.

Betty loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who called her to Glory on June 22, 2012, where she joined her beloved daughter Joan; her first husband Henry; her parents; her sister Violet Jean Lehmen, her brother James Whittemore; her brother Joseph who died in infancy; her nephews Leon Lehmen and Steven Whittemore; her great-nephews, Larry Lehmen and Bradford Whittemore; and many other departed loved ones. 

Gratefully blessed to have shared her life are her loving husband Bud; her son-in-law, Robin Kirton, her grandson Nathaniel, and granddaughter Emily with her children Isabelle and Sofia, all of St. Paul, Minnesota; her step-daughters, Regela Walz and her husband Larry of Huron, their son Andy (Jenny) of  Meckling, and Patti Dubro and her husband Wayne of Iroquois, and their daughter Darcy (Rob) Sheneman with their children Tracy, Dalton and Dacee of Tampa, Florida; her brother Cliff Whittemore and his wife Bonnie of Batesville, Arkansas, and their children, Brian Whittemore of Wichita, Kansas and Julie (Hal) Fletcher of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; her brother-in-law Ervan Lehmen of Huron and his children, Janelle Lehmen, Connie (Daniel) Bublitz, Laurie (Jeff) Dilley, and Sheila (Wyatt) Brotherton, all of Huron, Marilyn (David) Estby of Two Harbors, Minnesota, and Patty (Bruce) Mork of Lyons and his daughter-in-law, Patty (Rick) Schlimgen of Rapid City; her sisters-in-law Delores (Dean) Kasperson, Marvis Edwards, Verla Busch, Bonnie Kuhns and Doris Skow, all of Huron, Phyllis (George) Iverson of Marysville, Washington, Lois (Pete) Mazzucco of San Jose, California, and Ruth (Stan) Goodman of Costa Mesa, California; as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
