A family is a legacy of love, a love that lasts forever.

Beryl Miller

Beryl Miller, age 85, of Huron, died Thursday, March 26, 2009, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  Her funeral service was at 1:30 PM Monday, March 30, 2009, at Riverview United Methodist Church with Rev. Barry Whipkey officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.   Memorials may be directed to the Riverview United Methodist Church.

Beryl Sarah Jane Gates was born on February 8, 1924 to Charles Bert and Edith (Hailstone) Gates in Downham Market, England.  She attended beautician school in England and after becoming a beautician, she opened her own beauty shop.  Beryl served the war cause for the British during World War II, working in munitions plants.  It was at this time that she met Clyde D. Miller.  She came to the United States and married Clyde on December 14, 1947.  They lived on a farm near Wessington and raised their two sons, Donald and Jerry.

Beryl was very industrious and especially enjoyed gardening and cooking.  She won an award at the South Dakota State Fair for one of her cakes.  Beryl also enjoyed being involved in activities at the churches she attended in Wessington Springs and at Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron.  She tended the flowers that grew outside the church for many years.  Beryl found much joy in helping others.  She was always helping neighbors with cleaning or cooking needs.  She would also do anything to help her sons and their families.  Beryl appreciated the simple things in life like beautiful flowers and fresh fruit.  Though she loved her family and friends, she always longed for her homeland, England.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Don (Anita) of Aberdeen and Jerry (Janell) of Huron; one brother, Don Gates of England; eight grandchildren, Dulcie (Dick) Dailey of Watertown, Sonja Cole of Watertown, Cody Miller of Watertown, Jean and Nolan Miller of Aberdeen, Amy (John) Ackerson of West Plains, Missouri, Amber Miller of California and Landon Miller of Huron; seven great-grandchildren, Christian and Bronson Cole, Chelsea (Chris) Paulson, Megan Grimes, Wyatt Dailey, and Jacob and Evan Ackerson; and one great-great-granddaughter, Avah Paulson.

Beryl was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, her parents, and a younger brother, Arch Gates.
