Bernice Gortmaker obituary photoBernice Gortmaker, age 74, of Huron, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at her residence.  Her funeral service was at 1 PM Friday, June 29 at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Marc Anderson officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. 

Bernice Irene Wheelhouse was born January 31, 1938, at Miller, South Dakota to Ben and Anna (Boldt) Wheelhouse.  She grew up in Miller, St. Lawrence, Parker, Vayland, Huron and Cavour. 

On September 2, 1956, she married Ben Jefferson Gortmaker.  To this union five children were born.  They lived in Miller until December 1969, when she and her children moved to Huron.  She graduated with a G.E.D in 1976.

Bernice sold Avon for about six years and did house cleaning for a number of families in Huron for many years.  She loved cats, and enjoyed knitting dish cloths and doing things for others.  Listening to country music was also a favorite.  Bernice volunteered for the Salvation Army for several years.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Dennis (special friend Becky Pfeifer) of Huron, Todd (Dawn) of Sioux Falls, and Les (Jacinta) of St. Paul, Minnesota; two daughters, Sandra (David) Stverak of Sioux Falls and Joyce (Tim) Froelich of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota; two grandsons, Holden Stverak of Sioux Falls and Alex Gortmaker of St. Paul, Minnesota; one sister, Norma (Douglas) Teuber of Altoona, Iowa; one niece, Lana (Randy) Young of Altoona, Iowa; two nephews, Scott (Susan) Teuber of Littleton, Colorado and Dean (Stacey) Teuber of Thornton, Colorado; three great-nieces, Courtney and Brittany Teuber of Littleton, Colorado and Rio Eliana Teuber of Thornton, Colorado; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; and many other relatives.
