Bernetta Kingdon obit photoBernetta “Bernie” Kingdon, age 65, of Huron, died Monday, April 14, 2008 at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  Her funeral service was 10:30 AM, Monday, April 21st at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating.  Burial was in the Altoona Cemetery at Hitchcock. 

Bernetta Janet Penney was born south of De Smet, South Dakota on the family farm on June 28, 1942, to Bernard and Etta (Williams) Penney.  Bernetta was her mother’s birthday present.  She attended De Smet Elementary and High School. 

Bernetta worked at the Plains until going to work for Armour and Company.  Bernetta met and was united in marriage to Bill Peskey on July 11, 1985.  She continued to work through the years of the plant changes, which included Swift and Dakota Pork, working as a cook then cashier.  On September 6, 1994, Bernie joined into marriage with John E. Kingdon.  After twenty years combined working up on the hill she retired to then assist her husband John at the Kingdon Variety store in Hitchcock, as well as the farm business.  Bernie and John enjoyed life in South Dakota in the spring and summer then traveled to their winter home in Mission, Texas.  In Mission, Bernie instructed line dancing as well as cheered on John at all the Texas jam sessions.

She deeply loved her many Texas friends she grew to call her family.  Bernie loved people.  Bernetta was a member in many organizations but the important organizations were those which involved her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Bill on April 23, 1988 and John on January 8, 2007; one brother, Alvin “Butch” Penney; one son-in-law, Rick Grubbs; one step-son, James Peskey; one brother-in-law, Palmer Johnson, and two sisters-in-law, Ruby Penney and Helen Penney.

 Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Larry (Laura) Cross and Debi Grubbs; stepchildren, Kathlyn L. Kingdon, John Stephen Kingdon, Mary M. (Doug) Bybee, Robert (Mary) Peskey, David (Rachel) Peskey, Delbert (Deanna) Peskey, (Kathy) Peskey and Jeff (Vicki) Peskey; grandchildren, Jennifer Grubbs, Sarah Grubbs, Jordan Peskey, Dallas Peskey, Cody Schnetter, Ashley (Rick) Reese, John Andrew Kingdon, Lexis Kingdon, Sondra (Charles) Lavine, Aaron Kelley, Chris Kelley, Bryan Bybee, and Sarah Bybee; great-grandchildren, Abbey Reese, Kaleb Kelley and Addie Lavine; four brothers, James (Audrey) Penney, John Penney, Leonard Penney and Lee Roy Penney; and two sisters, Mary Johnson and Bernadine (James) Koehntopp; and sister-in-law, Juanita Kingdon.
