Ann Marie Hofer

Ann Marie Hofer obituary photoAnn Marie Hofer, age 89, of Huron and formerly of Doland, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Stoneybrook Suites.  Her funeral service was at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, July 26th, at the Emmanuel Mennonite Church, rural Doland, with Rev. Gordon Wiebe officiating.  Burial was in the Emmanuel Mennonite Church Cemetery.  The family prefers memorials which will be given to Gideon’s Bibles International and Lowell Lundstrom Ministries.

Ann Marie Hofer was born to Joseph and Mary Hofer on January 8, 1922, at the family home near Hitchcock, South Dakota, with a midwife in attendance.  She attended LaDelle Country Grade School. After completing the eighth grade, she worked for the Geiger family in Huron.

Ann married Edwin J. Hofer on October 11, l941. They lived and farmed near Doland until Fall 1971 when they moved to Doland. Ann was always an active participant in their farming operation.

Following their move to Doland, Ann began working at the South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield and retired from there in September 1988. She worked her way from kitchen helper to supervisor. Retirement offered her the opportunity to garden, spend time participating in the Senior Citizen's activities, go with friends to church bazaars, and help others.

Ann received Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She was baptized on June 11, 1939, at the Hutterthal Mennonite Church on the confession of her faith. She became a member of the Emmanuel Mennonite Church on November 3, 1946, and attended there until her death.

Ann loved the Lord, found great comfort in his love for her, and enjoyed a very close personal relationship with him. One aspect of living out her faith was her service to others. She loved to bake and cook. Anyone she knew was more than likely to be a recipient of her “goodies.” She loved helping her friends and it was not uncommon for her to drive them to their appointments. At other times it was just being available, a friend with whom to go out to eat or just to talk on the phone.   In September of 2009 she moved to Stoneybrook Suites in Huron.  Ann thoroughly enjoyed living at Stoneybrook and quickly made it into her new home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 37 years, Edwin J.; one sister, Maggie Hofer; and two brothers, Joe and Gearhard Hofer.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her sister, Viola Gross of Worthington, Minnesota; one son, Sal (Eileen) Hofer of Doland; two daughters, Sheila Hofer (Bob Nelson) of Shell Lake, Wisconsin and Kristi (Ron) Knust of Harrisburg; five grandchildren, Steve (Liz) Hofer of Wentworth, Chad (Carrie) Hofer of Willoughby, Ohio, Tamijo (Kris) Bronson of Ortley, Josh Knust of Ames, Iowa and Jessa Knust of Iowa City, Iowa; two step grandchildren, Scott (Shan) Nelson of Minneapolis, Minnesota and  Nancy Nelson of Volo, Illinois; four great-grandchildren; and seven step great-grandchildren.
