Alfred “Al” Schmaltz

Alfred “Al” Schmaltz, age 62, of Huron, died Thursday, October 18, 2007, at the Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  His memorial service was at 2:00 PM on Monday, October 22nd at the Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. William Holmes officiating. 

Al Schmaltz was born on July 18, 1945, at Mobridge, South Dakota to Jake and Margaret (Bosch) Schmaltz.  Al grew up at Mobridge, graduating from Mobridge High School.  On February 17, 1973, Al married Andrea Schaeffer at Aberdeen.  After their marriage, they lived in Aberdeen, then moved to Huron where Al was owner/operator of A-1 Steam Brothers.   He worked for Dakota Pork until it closed, then moved to Aberdeen again for a short time.  Al then moved back to Huron and has worked at Runnings Farm and Fleet store in the sporting goods department for many years. As a hobby Al made clocks.  He also enjoyed fishing and cooking.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Edward.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Amanda Schmaltz and her fiance Daniel Schumacher of Huron; his son, Allan Schmaltz and special friend Gloria Grue of Brookings; his former wife Andrea Schmaltz of Huron; two sisters, Betty (Al) Lipp of Greybull, Wyoming and Agnes Mitchell of Girard, Kansas; and three brothers, Will (Adzi) Schmaltz of Mobridge and Ray (Gwen) Schmaltz and Eugene Schmaltz both of Seattle, Washington.
