Florence Reimers obit photoFlorence Reimers, age 96, of Grand Island, Nebraska and formerly of Huron, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Grand Island, Nebraska.  Her funeral service was at 2 PM, Saturday, August 9th at the First Presbyterian Church.  Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. 

Florence Dirksen was born November 16, 1917, to Frank and Lillian (Halpin) Dirksen and lived on a farm near Bancroft, South Dakota. She attended school in Iroquois, South Dakota and then transferred to Huron Junior High when she and her parents moved to Huron, South Dakota in 1932.  For many years, Florence sometimes worked in her father’s small grocery store, the Service Grocery on 5th Street.  She graduated from Huron High School with the Class of 1936. After graduating in business from the Huron College, she worked for the Macabee Insurance Co. and F. W. Woolworth store.

Florence married Ernest Reimers at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota. on June 5, 1938. They met at a local dance. After living in Crandall, South Dakota for a short time, she and Ernie moved back to Huron. Ernie worked at Armour’s Meat Packing plant and they were both very much involved in the Elks Baseball team on which Ernie was a pitcher. They raised four children: Ron, Cheryl, Charlet, and Kevin. In 1965, Florence began working for the Tempo store, until 1968 when the store burned down. Then she worked at JC Penney until she retired in 1986. Ernie passed away in December 1978.  On August 23, 1994, she married Lyle Schroder. They lived together in Huron for 12 years and attended both the Baptist Church and the Presbyterian Church.

Her community involvement includes belonging to the Beadle County Extension Club for over 50 years, a sewing club, Lioness Club, Christian Women, and she was a leader for the Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scout troops, and a 4-H club. As a member of the Presbyterian Church in Huron for 60 years, she belonged to various Ladies Aid circles, was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, a trustee, and a Deacon.

She had a life-long interest in crafts, ceramics, sewing and gardening. She won many awards and ribbons for items entered in the Cultural Arts Program of the Beadle County Extension Clubs, the Women’s Building and the Horticulture Building at the South Dakota State Fair. Another one of her interests was bowling in a league, which she enjoyed and scored very well even into her 80's. 

She is survived by her son, Ronald (Stella) Reimers of Grand Island; and two daughters, Cheryl (Duane) Coates of Vista, California and Charlet Bertsch of San Diego, California; six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 18 step-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a baby sister; her husband, Ernest; her husband, Lyle; and three brothers, Ralph, Lloyd and Dan Dirksen.  She also lost a son, Kevin Reimers, in 1972.
