         Don's Register Book               

 

       Donald Bartholow, age 85, of Huron, died Monday, November 6th at the Huron Nursing Home. A private burial service was held at Riverside Cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Visitation was from 1 to 9 PM Thursday at the Kuhler Funeral Home with the family present from 7 to 8 PM.  A memorial service was held at 1 PM Tuesday, November 21st at the First United Methodist  Church with Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating.  Memorials may be directed to the HRMC Blood Bank, the First United Methodist Church Foundation, or the Huron  Community Foundation. 

     Donald Herbert Bartholow was born September 4, 1921, at Spencer, South Dakota to William Earl and Viola (Walker) Bartholow.  He attended school in Spencer and graduated from Spencer  High School. Don attended Sioux Falls College and played football there.

     On January 25, 1942, he enlisted in the US Navy.  While in Navy  training, he met Barbara Nelson and they were married on November 12, 1943, in Elmhurst, Illinois.  Don was discharged  from the Navy on October 9, 1945.

      Don returned to South Dakota and lived and worked in Spencer for a  couple of years before moving to Huron and joining the family business, W.E. Bartholow & Son Construction Company.  In the early sixties, he became president  of W.E. Bartholow & Son and successfully led the company until it was sold in 1985.

      In 1964, Don founded Asphalt Paving and Materials Company and successfully led the company until the late 1980s, when he turned over  leadership of the company to his son, Bill.  During his construction career, he served the Highway Heavy Chapter of the  South Dakota Association of General Contractors as a board member for many years, and as its president in 1966.

      In the community he served on many boards, including the board of the Huron Jaycees, which he served as president in the late 1950's. 

      Don was a member of the Huron Masonic Lodge and the Huron Sertoma Club.

     He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church and was instrumental in the building of the new church, along with some additional improvements after the church was built.

      He enjoyed playing golf and hunting in his younger years, and had the privilege of playing golf once with Jack Nicholas.  He also enjoyed playing  cards his entire life. 

      He was preceded in death by his parents; five older brothers; a daughter, Karla in November 1966; and his wife, Barbara on June 7, 2003.

      He is survived by a son, Bill (Judy) Bartholow of Huron; a daughter, Holly (Robert) Hohm, of Huron; five  grandchildren, Kristina (Devon) Sommer, Daniel Hohm, Matthew Hohm, Mike (LeAnn) Bartholow and Bonnie Bartholow; and three great-grandsons.
